CHURCH VISITS

This is a short one. I can't remember which trip to Mexico it was but on one of them we went to Mass in a town called Matehuala on the highway out from Nuevo Laredo. It was a small church with no chairs or pews. Just worshippers standing around facing the makeshift altar. When we walked in some of the worshippers saw us and then they all turned around staring at us. I guess we were really strange to them because they were all little Inditos and we were so much taller than they. Made us feel really out of place. That reminds me of another church day when we were in Germany. We attended the church, enjoying the music, the beautiful stained glass windows and of course, not understanding a word the priest said but receiving communion. It wasn't until we were returning to our car that we saw the church sign and realized that we had been in an Episcopal service. Glad there is only one God.

LUNCH IN THE CADILLAC

My first marriage was in 1957...wow! 68 years ago! Well, anyway, I want to tell you about a couple of things that happened then.  We spent our first night of marriage in a hotel in Laredo and the next day we crossed over to Nuevo Laredo to begin our honeymoon in Mexico. We went to the Cadillac Bar, a popular place for lunch.  It wasn't just a bar, it was a restaurant with a bar. We had been there before with friends from San Antonio and we really liked it. We walked in, looked around for a table and what should we see but a large group of friends from San Antonio who had been at our wedding! They motioned us over to sit with them and we had a great time even though we were subject to a lot of teasing.                                                  The Cadillac Bar sadly closed in 2010

THE LITTLE RED WAGON

Sixty-five years have passed since the little episode I will set down here today.  My eldest son, Paul, was a few months old and we lived in a one bedroom duplex in Albuquerque. It was a nice neighborhood and comfortable little place, nothing to get excited about though. One day it was time for lunch and when I went to the kitchen I found that there wasn't anything for me to eat. I had plenty of baby food but nothing else. How this had escaped my attention I don't know. After I calmed myself down and stopped crying, I went next door to the landlady's and asked if I could use the phone. Of course, we didn't have one.  I called my husband at work (Fine Cars, Inc.) and told him about the situation. He quieted me down and said he'd sell a car so not to worry. That sounds silly now, doesn't it? Well, he called back in about an hour and a half and told me to go to the store and buy whatever I needed. He had sold a Jaguar which gave a hefty commission! I got my little...
