FORAYS INTO THE CITY

This is a short story that I may have shared before.  When I was in college in Denton the powers that be were kind enough to take us girls in to Dallas every once in a while to see some form of entertainment. One such trip took us to see the musical Pajama Game.   However, the leading lady, Janis Paige had become ill, so a stand-in named Shirley McLaine took her place and boy she was good! I think that was her first important role. Another time we went in to see the Jose Greco Spanish Flamenco dance group. The dancing was wonderful and when I got back to the dorm I tried to spin around like he did and come down on one knee. It looked so easy when he did it. Ha! It's a wonder I didn't break my kneecap! See, I told you it was short.

FUN FACTS FROM THE 1500S

I ran across these today while trying to organize my writing and I think you will enjoy them. They purport to be practices from the 1500s. Could be..... Baths equaled a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally, the children. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence, the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water." Houses had thatched roofs. Thick straw, piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the pets...dogs, cats and other small animals, mice rats, bugs lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying, "It's raining cats and dogs." Sometimes they could obtain pork and would feel really special when that happened. When company came over, they would bring out some bacon a...

A TO V

The other day I wrote that I had run out of new subjects and that I would quit this “Quips from Kay” site, but a couple of my readers have said they don’t mind repetition, so here I am again. One old friend reminded me of the stuff we used to do when we were in high school, but I’ll save that for later. I want to resend a note I wrote to my family way back in 1980 when we lived in New Orleans. Some of you won’t be able to relate to it but anyway, here it is. (OMG, that was 42 years ago!) “I find myself in a “Goldilocks” situation. I have tried to find pantyhose that fit but in an era when manufacturers think that the average women is two sizes, that is 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, etc, it is difficult to find hose that are one numbered size. There are hose labeled A-B,C-D,E-F, and so on. Well, A-B is too short and C-D causes me to have to wear them up under my breasts because they are too long. I am fairly sure that the waist of E-F would wind up under my arms. If they feel compelled to...
