BIRD HUNTING

My previous post entitled "Balance" brought to mind a couple of other stories about the same lady, Anne, whose son was obese. She was quite a character and I remember seeing her arrive at church making quite a scene. She would stroll in waving to everyone saying "Hi, Toodles" with a big grin on her face.  One time she went to a dance at the country club wearing a very decollete dress. A friend of hers took her in to the ladies room and told her to turn the dress around, putting the low cut in back. It really looked a lot better and fit fine since Anne's back was about as big as her front. (I am using names here because all this occurred over 80 years ago.) That's not all. My husband and I went bird hunting with Choppy and his wife one Saturday at his ranch. We set up watching for birds coming in to a tank. We were provided with supplies to keep us comfortable, such as a case of beer and camp stools. Choppy had to have two camp stools to sit on, one for each...

BALANCE

When I was growing up in Beeville there was one hotel, The Kohler, downtown and it was owned and operated by a local couple.  However it was the wife who ran the place because her husband sat in his limousine in front of the hotel yelling out the window to anyone going in that they shouldn't stay there. No one paid any attention to him though because either they had heard about him or the fact that it was the only hotel in town. Unfortunately, there was little happiness in that family. Their son was a nice guy but very obese. He used to throw great parties up in his suite on the second floor. He afforded his guests plenty of food and liquor but he didn't eat until the party was over because once he started he had trouble stopping. During one of these events he stepped out on the rear balcony and yelled out at the guys working below for them to be quieter. Unfortunately he leaned a bit too far and fell out landing on the cement mixer that was parked below.  That was his last pa...

COLD MEMORIES

Sixty-five years ago we lived in Albuquerque and that's where my second child was born. We rented a house on the outskirts of town on a street called Nara Visa, This was not a well-equipped house as it had only one panel wall heater. For those of you who don't know, that's a heater about 3x5' built into the wall and it's not very efficient. When it was time to feed my newborn baby I would pull up a chair directly in front of the heater and hope we would both be warm. When I finished feeding him I would dash back to the bed and cover up with all the blankets I had.  I thought of this now because it's 43 right out our back door and we are all thinking that's pretty cold. Well, let me tell you, that's warm compared to an icy winter day in a little house in the outskirts of Albuquerque.  For obvious reasons this reminds me to ask that we all pray for those who have no shelter at this time.

ON AGING

It's been a while since I thought of anything you might be interested in. Don't know if the following will be appreciated but here it is.                                                      * * * * * * * * In my 90th year I have finally accepted the fact that my body looks its age. Well, what did I expect? But, thank God, my brain, although a bit slower, is in better shape. Let's hope it will continue that way.
